Monday - July 9, 2018 Peterborough to Lakefield - 7 locks
The second lock, lock #21, today is one of the highlights of the Trent Severn Waterway.... Peterborough Lift Lock. This is the tallest lift lock in the world and one of two on the TSW. Think of this as two huge tubs filled with water. One is up even with the upper canal and the other down even this the lower part of the canal. In our case we are locking up. We entered the lower tub, mind you these tubs can accommodate four big boats at a time. Once all the boats are inside the tub, a big steel door closes behind the boats. The same is happening in the upper tub. Once the doors are closed the lock master will add a bit more water to the upper tub making it just a little heavier then the lower one thus forcing it down and the lower one up. This entire process takes about 90 seconds. When the lower tub is now in the upper position the steel door is dropped down and the boats move out into the canal and on our way. We have a great video of us going up in the lift, unfortunately it will not upload to the blog.
We are getting ready to enter the lock to the left. There are already 3 large boats in there including one tour boat. |
